shelby & kolby | downtown engagement | peoria, il.

I’ve known Shelby and her family for as long as I can recall — I remember her as a young girl, and I took her senior photos years later, and then I photographed her sister’s wedding a few years after that. When she reached out to inquire with me about wedding photography after getting engaged, I was excited to get to spend time getting to know not only her as an adult, but also to meet Kolby and see what the two of them were like together.

We met on a beautiful fall afternoon for their engagement session right after they each got off work, meandering our way around downtown Peoria as we chatted about what life had looked like in the time since I had done her senior session. They told me that the two of them had first met through mutual friends years ago while they were both seeing other people, and they actually went on a double date (with other people as their dates) during that time. They eventually reconnected years later, and this time it was as two single people who found themselves hitting it off.

Kolby and Shelby seem much different from one another on paper — Kolby works with his Dad on the family farm, while Shelby prefers urban life to the country and has always loved the city. But once you see the two of them together, these elements feel pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme of the lives ahead of them, because as a pair they’re playful and thoughtful toward each other and clearly excited about not only their wedding plans, but more importantly, their future. I had such a great time spending this evening photographing their love and can’t wait to spend their wedding day doing the same.
