kristina + brad | firehouse chicago wedding.

I knew this day would be a good one from the moment I first sat down with Kristina and Brad over drinks last year. They told me about all of the plans they were making and the elements they were excited about – their beautiful venue, and the outdoor ceremony, and potentially having Big Star catered for their guests, to name a few. I loved every little detail of what they shared with me as well as how much it all meant to them, and I couldn’t wait to see it all come together.

Their day ended up being a chilly one for early October, and there was a steady mist as Kristina and I made our way to Firehouse for her to see Brad for the first time that day. He stood outside the front of the building, and though Kristina was carrying an umbrella at first, she ditched it as she made her way toward him. She came up from behind and gave him a big squeeze, to which he excitedly replied, “can I turn around now?” Once he did, they grinned at each other and laughed and kissed and talked about the events of the day thus far, and I watched as the morning’s nerves immediately fell away. From there they entered their venue, exclaiming and beaming as they saw the florist putting the finishing touches on their arbor and the coordinator working on the table set ups inside. Kristina gazed around as she told Brad it was exactly what she’d envisioned, and then they roamed the rest of the venue together as I photographed them. Brad held the umbrella over his soon-to-be bride as the light mist continued, and we eventually made our way toward the lake to meet their wedding party. While the breeze rolling off the water made it even colder for everyone, they bundled up and laughed off their shivers together.

Their guests did the same as they made their way to their seats for the ceremony – they wrapped up in coats and scarves and blankets, and they watched as Kristina came down the stairs to meet her father at the aisle. It was one of those ceremonies that made me wish I had a transcript of it afterward – their friend Jonah was the officiant, and he so eloquently described both their love and love itself that I often found myself wanting to nod my head in agreement. Brad had mentioned to me that morning that he was looking forward to their vows, and I felt myself tearing up from the aisle as they read them. Brad and Kristina are two people who so clearly found the person they were meant to find that you can feel it in everything they do – it’s evident in the words and looks they share, and the way they understand and calm each other, and in their friendships and relationships and their mutual recognition of the importance of these things in each other’s lives. I think often about how when it comes to a partner, really we’re all looking for someone who just kind of gets it – and as they tore up their dance floor and ordered at their taco truck and smiled knowingly throughout the toasts of their loved ones, I realized that’s exactly what Kristina and Brad have found in each other.
